May 2023: Social Media App Updates

Our favourite apps have had a busy few weeks. From multiple Reels updates to TikTok’s Creativity Program, there have been plenty of new updates. Let’s get into it!

Instagram:

  1. Reels

    1. Trends: IG has introduced a space for users to more easily find inspiration for their Reels that combines the latest trending audio, hashtags and topics. Perfect for strategic planning, users can now see where various songs and topics rank, helping to inform their own content decisions.

    2. Analytics: We’re also finally seeing updated Reels insights and analytics, which includes total and average watch times. Total watch time reflects the total amount of time your reel was played, while average watch time captures average amount of time spent playing your reel, calculated by dividing watch time with the number of total plays.

    3. Updated Editor: And finally, editing Reels just got a whole lot easier. Users now have access to video clips, audio, stickers, and text on one consolidated editing page, with the promise of more helpful updates to come.

  2. Link(s) In Bio: If you haven’t been a fan of using third-party ‘link in bio’ links, this is for you! Users can now add up to 5 links to their profile bio!

TikTok:

  1. Creativity Program: Currently in BETA and *available to US users with at least 10k followers and 100k authentic views in the last 30 days,* the Creativity Program Beta is set to replace the Creator Fund, and is the latest addition to TikTok’s range of monetization tools. More information to come; but if you meet the requirements, you can now apply to be a part of it!

  2. Animated Video Stickers for DMs: Have you tried this update out? Available in DMs, you can create or use preexisting video stickers that essentially work as GIFs.

Twitter:

  1. Inactive Accounts: Twitter is currently in the process of purging inactive accounts, freeing up handles. If you’ve had your eye set on a certain handle, now could be the time to scoop it up!

  2. Direct Responses In DM Threads: Just launched, users can now respond directly to any message in their DM threads, making group chats and conversations in general much more straight-forward.

  3. New Emoji Picker In DMs: Another update for your DMs; users now have access to a wider variety of emojis to better interact with messages and more accurately communicate how they’re feeling.

And that’s it! Which update are you most excited about? What update are you hoping to see next? Tag us on social at @springmediaco ☀️
